Guest Cottage – One Room Challenge Week 2 -The Vibe

Hello everyone! This is week 2 of the One Room Challenge. While we are knee deep in spackle and sheetrock dust inside our one room guest cottage, I took some time to pull together a design board for the space. I was feeling like I didn’t quite have a clear vision — do I go beachy, romantic, masculine, cottage-y? The process of making a design board really helped me clarify a direction. I landed on a masculine vibe for the space, softened with a mix of ditsy print textiles, and layered with a few vintage pieces to give a nod to the old seashore town in which we live.

The walls will be getting a board and batten treatment in a moody sage green and the nasty old ceiling tiles will be replaced with bright white painted bead board. Since we plan on using the cottage as a seasonal rental, I’m thinking a lot about clean-ability. My choice for the bed is an easy to sanitize faux leather headboard. (I’ll share how we make this in another post.) And, while I’d love to do a time worn vintage rug, I’m opting for a vintage-look Ruggable rug that can be popped in the washer in between guests.

The bathroom reno includes a bold ceramic tile on the floor in dark sage and dark blue. I found this tile on Wayfair.com and it became the jumping off point for the color palette in the cottage. (The blue is actually much darker in person)

I also liked the small print tile on the left but concluded that the scale was too small for the floor.

I’ll use a variety of smaller prints in the bedding instead. Love the mix of tiny patterns in this stack of sheets!

We’ll use an Ikea Godmorgon sink and vanity but we’ll replace the drawer fronts with walnut wood grain fronts from Semihandmade. Something like this:

I’m planning a mix of silver and black finishes in the bath. The living/sleeping space will also have some black elements in the lighting, curtain rods and shelf brackets
