Shiplap Walls for English Coastal Bedroom Spring ’24 One Room Challenge Week Two

Shiplap Walls for English Coastal Bedroom Spring ’24 One Room Challenge Week Two

Hello everyone! This is week 2 of the Spring ’24 One Room Challenge. If you are finding me through the One Room Challenge, welcome to my blog where I share my passion for creating comforting homes by thrifting, sewing and a little diy-ing along the way. While I’m not averse to buying new, I love being able to stretch a budget and get that “layered over time” look by incorporating vintage pieces. You can follow my decorating journey on the HomeSpunStyle Instagram.

If you missed my post from Week 1 where I revealed the plans for an English Coastal Style makeover of our master bedroom, you can find it here.

This week we installed vertical shiplap on two of the four walls of our bedroom. We started with removing all of the sheetrock on the exterior walls. (note: The two interior walls will remain sheet rocked as there is very little visible wall space between the closets, entry door and furniture.) We then installed five rows of 1 x 2 pine firring strips to provide sufficient structure to which to nail the shiplap.

For the shiplap, we purchased 1 inch x 6 inch x 8 foot white smooth pine nickel gap shiplap at Home Depot. They also come in 6 foot and 12 foot lengths as well as several different widths. Here are the ones we purchased:

We used an air nailer to install the boards which went fairly quickly. So quickly that Mr. HomeSpunStyle had finished the install before I was able to take photos! He added trim moulding around the ceiling and new moulding around the windows. This required installing window jamb extensions because of the added depth of the firring strips plus the thickness of the shiplap. In other words, the walls were now thicker than they were with sheetrock. Then it was on to spackling and sanding all the nail holes.

Finally, we painted the walls using Benjamin Moore Simply White in a satin finish and the ceiling in the same color but in a flat finish.

The shiplap is giving the room some much needed character and fits with the overall style of our cottage style home!
