English Coastal Style Master Bedroom – Spring ’24 One Room Challenge Week One

Hello everyone! This is week 1 of the Spring ’24 One Room Challenge. If you are finding me through the One Room Challenge, welcome to my blog where I share my passion for creating comforting homes by thrifting, sewing and a little diy-ing along the way. While I’m not averse to buying new, I love being able to stretch a budget and get that “layered over time” look by incorporating vintage pieces. You can follow my decorating journey on the HomeSpunStyle Instagram.

Since moving into our old seashore cottage style home three years ago, we are slowly making each room our own – blending fresh coastal style with a cozy English country home. Not an easy mix as the former is minimal and the latter tends toward maximal. So far, we’ve tackled the guest cottage on the property and a complete kitchen gut/reno, both of which were big projects. Now we’re ready for a smaller project which is our small master bedroom. The One Room Challenge is just the kick in the pants I need to complete this room down to the smallest accessory. So here we go at week #1 with some before photos:

Our primary bedroom is on the first floor of our home and it measures just 11′ 4″ x 11′ 2″. I wasn’t kidding when I said it was small. Here are the listing photos:

The room has two walls that each have a window. Another wall has the entry door and a tiny closet.

Here’s the listing photo of the living room. Our bedroom is situated to the right of the front door, on the other side of the living room wall. The entry to the bedroom is just around the corner.

One change that we have already made was to take the recessed area by the living room door and reframe that wall to allocate the space to a double closet in our bedroom. The living room is plenty large and this was the only space that we could steel for a much needed closet.

The current bedroom situation looks like this:

While the space is small it does have a few things going for it – pretty hardwood floors, antique glass doorknobs and good natural light.

Here is our to do list for creating the English coastal style bedroom that I’m dreaming of:

  • Install vertical ship lap on the walls
  • Paint
  • Lighting – change out the ceiling fixture and add more lighting
  • Window treatments
  • Bedding
  • small space storage solutions
  • Electrical – add outlets
  • Accessorize with vintage and thrifted finds

This is my mood board for the space. The jumping off point is the two vintage paint by number bird paintings that I thrifted a few years back and have been storing them until now. The room colors will be pulled from these paintings.

This week, we’ll be working on shiplapping the walls. Be sure to follow the Home Spun Style on Instagram for daily progress stories. And stop back here on my blog for weekly updates where I’ll be sharing more photos and details.
