Hello everyone! This is week 4 of the One Room Challenge. If you are finding me through the One Room Challenge, welcome to my blog where I share my passion for creating comforting homes by thrifting, sewing and a little diy-ing along the way! While I’m not averse to buying new. I love being able to stretch a budget AND get that “layered over time” look that comes from incorporating pieces that have had a previous life! You can follow my decorating journey on the HomeSpunStyle Instagram.
If you missed my posts from Week 1, 2 and 3 where the renovation of our galley kitchen in our 1940s coastal cottage began, you can find them here:
This week the shell of our kitchen was wrapped up – shiplap was added to our new vaulted ceiling, the floor was leveled and tiled and we were able to paint the walls and ceiling.
Before this new tile could be installed, we first had to deal with the uneven floor which is pretty typical of old homes. From one side of our kitchen to the other the difference in floor height was two inches! If we hadn’t dealt with it, leveling the new cabinets would have been a nightmare. Our contractor applied levelling compound over the entire floor which gave us a completely level base on which to install the cabinets. This added about two days to the process but it was worth it.
The tile we chose is from Bedrosians and is called Makoto Umi Terracotta.
I like the hex shape which actually makes our narrow kitchen feel wider. i also like how the color works with the adjacent dining room.
Shiplap was installed over the sheetrock on the new vaulted ceiling. We chose this for a coastal vibe and to tie to the original wainscoting on the walls in the dining nook.
Next week we’re installing floating shelves and bringing in the cabinets and new appliances.
Be sure to follow Home Spun Style on Instagram for sneak peaks of our progress. And stop back here on my blog for weekly updates where I’ll be sharing more photos and details. And you can check out the design plans of the other guest designers on the One Room Challenge Blog.
Thanks for following along!
