Demo and Reconstruction of a Galley Kitchen – One Room Challenge Week #3

Hello everyone! This is week 3 of the One Room Challenge. If you are finding me through the One Room Challenge, welcome to my blog where I share my passion for creating comforting homes by thrifting, sewing and a little diy-ing along the way! While I’m not averse to buying new. I love being able to stretch a budget AND get that “layered over time” look that comes from incorporating pieces that have had a previous life! You can follow my decorating journey on the HomeSpunStyle Instagram.

If you missed my posts from Week 1 and 2 where I revealed the design plans for renovating the galley kitchen in our 1940s coastal cottage, you can find them here:

This week is about the demolition of the old kitchen and the rebuild of the new shell. The footprint is staying the same but we’ve blown out the ceiling to a partial vault and added two skylights for some much needed natural light. While Mr. HomeSpunStyle and I love diy, the scope of this project and the need to open and close the “shell” quickly (so we could minimize eating out and doing dishes in the bathtub!), necessitated hiring out for this part of the renovation.

We started with a one hour consult with an interior designer. Our time with Katherine at Moose Designs was so worth it. She was able to help us visualize a vaulted ceiling and tell us how best to reconfigure the cabinet layout. She was also able to link us with a design/build firm to address structural issues, do the demo and reconstruct the space.

At this point in the process, the kitchen has been demo’d, the new vaulted ceiling has been framed and two skylights have been added. The rough electrical is complete, and the walls and ceiling have been insulated and sheet rocked. We also previously had the air handler for our hvac system relocated from the attic space above the kitchen to the attic space above the adjacent dining room. New ductwork for the air conditioning was also installed between the roof and the new vaulted ceiling.

So let’s take a look at a few progress pics::

The amount of natural light that pours into this space is amazing! The kitchen feels bigger even though we haven’t added any square footage. Next up is shiplap to the ceiling to add a coastal vibe and new tile flooring. Be sure to follow Home Spun Style on Instagram for sneak peaks of our progress. And stop back here on my blog for weekly updates where I’ll be sharing more photos and details.

And you can check out the design plans of the other guest designers on the One Room Challenge Blog.

Thanks for following along!
