We’ve been chipping away at the master bedroom at the beach house. I have a few more details to work on but they may be a long time coming … sometimes it takes me months to find the things I have in mind at the right price! But it’s 90% done so here we go!
Before
While we call this room the “master”, it hardly qualifies. It measures a mere 10.5 x 11 feet, with two small windows and no architectural details. But still, I think a small space can be cozy and even luxurious!
We started by painting all the walls Sherwin Williams “West Highland White”. We painted out the orangey-stained trim in SW “Extra White”. This gave us a nice clean backdrop and brightened the space. Fortunately, the hardwood floors were in pretty good shape so a good scrubbing was all that was needed.
To visually enlarge the windows and let in more light, we hung bamboo Roman shades and curtain panels up against the ceiling. I had seen this on Pinterest but didn’t really believe it would make much difference. Boy was I wrong!
The windows suddenly looked grand and we get maximum light now because the shades stack above the window when open, rather than covering up the top quarter of the window. The curtain panels also stack beyond the window.
Because this is such a small room, we decided to create a headboard right on the wall. For a queen size bed we needed it to be a minimum of 60 inches wide however the location of the studs dictated that we make it 67 inches wide.
Tom used 1 x 6 tongue and groove pine boards from Home Depot. He actually used the back side of the boards so as to hide the “beaded” front.
He trimmed the horizontal boards out with vertical molding on the sides and more molding across the top.
Then we simply butted up our bed frame to the wall. This saved us about 6 inches in “real estate” in this tiny room. We also invested in a new queen size mattress and metal bed frame from Sleepy’s. If you haven’t shopped for a good mattress lately, you will be shocked. At $1,200 this blew our budget!
We purchased the “classical steel bed base frame” which eliminates the need for a boxspring and provides more storage space underneath because of its greater height.
I really couldn’t justify any other major investments for this room, so I thrifted what I could and turned to Ikea and Home Goods for the rest!
After
For the bedding, I wanted lots of layers … a Ralph Lauren meets Boho sort of look for a cozy, romantic coffee-in-bed type morning! Fortunately I scored a Ralph Lauren blue plaid duvet cover at a thrift store and used it to make two euro shams. (I have a lot of fabric left over so you will see more of these plaid pillows popping up soon in my Etsy store!). I love the masculine element of plaid!
I also thrifted the off-white matelasse coverlet and patchwork quilt. I sewed up the sweater pillow from an old sweater.
The plaid sheets are new from Home Goods as it is hard to find sheets in thrift stores that aren’t worn (particularly the bottom sheet).
The curtains are IKEA Ritva…super affordable and nice quality and texture. Although they are called “white”, they are more of a cream color. The plug-in wall sconces are also from Ikea. I love the white and brass on these lamps! The black and white cords are pretty cute. too.
I scoured thrift shops for a tiny bedside table and came up empty. Soooo, I ended up using my painting stool as a bedside table!
It is small enough so as not to interfere with the swing of the closet door. I also like the way the step folds down when additional space is needed for reading material, IPhone, etc.
I hung a cute vintage rattan hat rack on the back of the closet door. 3M command strips are great for hanging things like this.
Next to the closet, is a tall dresser that I purchased awhile back at an auction. The ship painting (which needs to be hung) was thrifted. Everything else on the dresser top was thrited as well.
I still have an upholstered bench to make over for the foot of the bed …. this will make a nice perch for suitcases. When I find the right fabric for it, I will be sure to share it with you!
