OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Our family loves to watch birds – especially in the winter. Invite feathered friends to your home by making these easy bird seed ornaments. It’s also another great activity for the kids.

I found this recipe on a cute blog called saltwater-kids.

Here’s what you’ll need:

3/4 cup flour

1/2 cup water

1 envelope unflavored gelatin

3 tbsp. corn syrup

4 cups birdseed

cookie cutters

cooking spray or shortening

waxed paper

ribbon, twine or string

1.) Mix together the flour, water, gelatin and corn syrup in a large mixing bowl.

2.) Add birdseed and mix until well combined.

3.) Spray cookie cutters with cooking spray or grease with shortening.  Line counter with waxed paper and place cookie cutters on top.

4.) Fill cookie cutter with birdseed mixture.  Pack down the mixture with the back of a greased spoon and smooth out the top.  Should be at least 1/2 inch thick.

5.) Poke a hole through the top of each mold using a drinking straw or wooden skewer.

6.) Leave the birdseed mixture to dry for at lease 2-3 hours.

7.) Gently remove the hardened birdseed mixture and place the ornament back on the waxed paper to continue to harden.  Allow them to dry for another 2-3 hours or overnight.

We packaged up a few of these ornaments to use as party favors for my daughter’s birthday party.

Sometimes it will take the birds up to a week to find this new food source.  Just be patient.  Sit back with a cup of hot coffee or cocoa and enjoy!
