Upcycled t-shirt

Upcycled t-shirt

Looking to update your wardrobe but find yourself a little short on cash?  Look no further than your husband’s t-shirt drawer.  No husband?  No problem.  Thrift shops are chock full of cast off t-shirts just waiting for someone to come along and breathe some new life into them.

The kids and I spent every morning this week at our church’s Vacation Bible School.  The theme for the week was Big Heart Farm: Where God’s fruit grows, based on the verses of Galatians 5:16-26.  The kids had a blast learning about God’s word through stories, games, crafts and songs.

All of the volunteers for this week were given a free, very large t-shirt with the week’s theme printed on it.  It was fun to see the creativity of these volunteers as they upcycled these shirts, elevating them into new creations.  Here’s a few examples:

As you can see, people got creative with scissors, fabric paint and beads.

I went home and scanned Pinterest for inspiration.  Since the theme for the week had to do with planting seeds and growing fruit, I chose to fashion my shirt after this farm inspired peasant top.

You can find the directions for this shirt at mygrammasaid.blogspot.com.

I thought it was adorable and the directions didn’t look too hard.

For this top, you’ll need a sewing machine and basic sewing skills.  This top takes 1-2 hours to complete or in my case, a whole evening with several interruptions. This is how mine turned out:

I’m happy with the results and can’t wait to try out these other shirts from pinterest.

I just love a project that doesn’t cost anything!
